A Parent’s Quick Guide to Prevent Cavities

Tooth decay is the most common disease of childhood, even more prevalent than asthma. But did you know cavities are preventable? Dr. Laura Juntgen has 10 tips help to lower the risk of decay.

1. Establish a dental home by age one

2. Avoid bottles and/or sippy cups in bed

3. Use fluoride toothpaste with the very first tooth

4. Start flossing when two neighbor teeth contact

5. Brush twice a day (after breakfast and before bed)

6. Avoid snacking throughout the day

7. Limit non-water drinks to mealtimes

8. Eat more fresh food than boxed/bagged treats

9. Supervise or complete all brushing/flossing on kids

10. Complete bi-annual dental visits

These simple steps will drastically lower your child’s risk of decay. It’s also recommended to find a pediatric dentist who specializes in the care of kids. Pediatric dentists complete additional training (after dental school) to address the specific needs of young patients.
