Your Child's First Appointment
Scheduling your child’s first visit with us is stress-free and easy. You can do so over the phone or by completing a booking request form. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends we see your child when their first tooth appears or before their first birthday. Even if there are only a few visible teeth, Dr. Juntgen can educate you on how to help prevent cavities in future teeth.
We see kids of all ages and modify each visit to their personalities and needs. If your child has sensory needs, the ideal first step may be a desensitization visit. Otherwise, take a look at what a typical first visit to Hamilton County Pediatric Dentistry involves:
Our front-desk sets up an initial phone call where we get to know a little about you and your kiddo. We ask about their medical history, likes or dislikes, favorite movie, etc. This information allows us to create a unique experience for them. We welcome them by name, design a dental bib for them, and play their favorite movie while we take a look around. Our team desires to make it a special day for the whole family.
Once you have both met the team and toured the office, we get to know you a little better. We may do this in the dental chair or use the magnet wall in our consultation room for more active kids. Dr. Juntgen or our new patient coordinator explain each step of the initial exam and answer any questions you may have.
When your child is ready to get started, we let them choose a toothbrush at our brushing station and have a spruce up if needed. They can try one of our wacky toothpaste flavors including bubble gum and cookie dough (patient favorites)! Next, we show you all of the tools that will be used during the appointment. Kids can touch, smell, taste, and ask any questions. Following the cleaning, Dr. Juntgen completes the exam using photos and x-rays if necessary.
Throughout the exam, we make it fun for your child by playing games, using distraction techniques, and offering rewards. We then speak to Mom or Dad about our findings and work out a treatment plan together. Before you leave, we take a “first-appointment photo” (for the family scrapbook) and give you a starter pack filled with information about our dentist, tips for healthy teeth, and more.
